Puerto Rican anarchist Luisa Capetillo challenged societal norms by becoming the first woman to wear pants in public in Puerto Rico. She was jailed for her action, which was considered a crime then. The charges were later dropped. Capetillo continued to be on the forefront of reform in Puerto Rico throughout the late 19th and early 20th century.

She was also a writer and fought for workers and women’s rights (she is considered to be one of Puerto Rico’s first suffragists).

Protesters Clash With Police In India’s Capital Over Brutal Group Rape

Indian police fired tear gas, batons and water cannons against protesters in the capital New Delhi as thousands demanded the death penalty for five men who raped a 23-year-old student. Some of the demonstrators sustained injuries.

Crowds of protesters attempted to make their way to the presidential mansion at Raisina Hill and then tried to break through steel barricades surrounding a high-security zone where the presidential mansion, the prime minister’s office and various ministries are located.

The protesters carried banners that read ‘Save women, save India’ and ‘Hang the rapists.’ Police cracked down on the rally after some demonstrators began to throw stones at security forces.

The clashes come after days of protests sparked by a brutal attack on a young student. Protesters are demanding the death penalty for the five suspects, who were detained following the December 16 attack. The sixth assailant apprehended on Friday.

The group of drunk men attacked the woman and her 28-year-old friend while on a charter bus that drove through the city for hours, even passing through police checkpoints. The assailants were armed with iron rods, and gang-raped the victim and brutally beat her and her friend. They were both then dumped on the side of the road on at high speed.

Doctors at the hospital where the victim was taken said she remains in critical but stable condition, and has been removed from her ventilator.

The violence prompted activists to demand that the government tougher measures to protect women from the daily threat of harassment and violence. General Vijay Kumar Singh, a retired Indian army chief, called for the training and arming of security forces to deal with the issue.

On Friday, Indian officials announced a broad campaign aimed at protecting the rights of women in New Delhi. The government also said it would demand life sentences for the woman’s six attackers and pay the victims medical bills, and promised stricter policing to prevent future such incidents.

Hundreds of students and activists blockaded roads in New Delhi on Friday and marched to the president’s palace, breaking through police barricades.

New Delhi, with a population of nearly 17 million people, has the highest number of reported sex crimes of all India’s cities. The number of reported rape cases in the capital has risen 17 percent from 2011, to 661 this year, government figures revealed. According to police statistics, a rape is reported on average every 18 hours, and a sexual assault occurs every 14 hours in the capital.

Myth of the Day 79

Myth: “A hard dick has no conscience.”

Fact: I’m often asked whether erections take blood from the brain, thus inhibiting decision making. Though erections are indeed caused by blood flow into the penis, the body has more than enough blood to support the operation of every other organ during physical arousal. There is no scientific evidence that a hard-on impairs cognitive function. In other words, no one can justify assault or infidelity based on biology. A penis may have no conscience (flaccid or hard), but the moral center of the brain (the frontal lobe) does—and that moral center keeps right on working, no matter how turgid the erection. By the way: Clitoral erections are far more frequent in people with vaginas. But I’ve never heard anyone claim that a swollen clit has no conscience.

I seriously just had to teach my mother some basics of parenting.

Both photos are of my daughter in October, the first in 2011, the second in 2012.  I let her pick out her own clothes, shoes, haircuts, hair colors, anything superficial, really.  She’s too young to understand the permanence of piercings, so she doesn’t have any.  But hair grows, shoes get grown out of, clothes go threadbare.  These things don’t really matter—shouldn’t really matter—but anyone raising a gender-variant child knows the world isn’t that kind.

My daughter recently requested a haircut like mine.  A long flop on top, pixie-length fade on the back and sides.  She’s been bugging me for weeks to color her hair again, I just haven’t had the time.  But today she came to me with the same shyness she keeps developing when outside our home; she’s being pressured by peers and family to look “normal,” to grow her hair long and uncolored, to dress a certain way (she hates to match), to indulge in self-consciousness, and alter or not alter her appearance to gain the approval of others, and society at large.

THIS FUCKING INFURIATES ME.

I called my mother tonight, because my daughter had become shy again, and didn’t want to color her hair anymore, and she said it was because of what her Nana had said to her.  My mother told me we should get that spray-on Halloween hair colors, so it wouldn’t be so “permanent” and my daughter could be “normal” again to avoid being bullied.

IT IS NOT THE JOB OF THE VICTIM TO STOP BEING BULLIED.  IT IS THE BULLY’S JOB TO STOP BULLYING.

I know she gets teased sometimes, and we always talk about it.  She stays strong and confident, so long as she has the support of those around her.  But what that support falters, or pulls a 180, she’s left to crash.

She also gets teased for liking dinosaurs and not dolls.  She gets teased for preferring roughhousing to playing house.  She gets teased for liking Lightning McQueen and not Cinderella.  Where do we draw the line?

My mother thinks this is a “minor” thing, that it’s better to just blend in.  But it would plant the seed of doubt, it forms the foundation for queer kids staying in the closet, for disabled kids to feel worthless, for young girls accepting abusive partners.  This is not “minor,” it is fucking MAJOR, because this is my daughter’s foundation, and it will shape her life.

Support your fucking kids.  Let them be who they want to be, look how they want to look, and play how they want to play.  And make sure they know that you will love them no matter what.
